Taal Volcano logs minor phreatic eruption — Phivolcs

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Thursday said it recorded a minor phreatic eruption in Taal Volcano in Batangas.

The said eruption occurred at 5:46 a.m. It emitted 6,307 tons of sulfur dioxide, with plumes reaching up to 500 meters tall that drifted southwest.

“This event produced a 1500-meter white plume that drifted southwest,” Phivolcs said in its advisory.

A volcanic earthquake was also recorded over Taal last Wednesday.

A long-term deflation of the Taal Caldera and a short-term inflation of the general northern and southeastern flanks of the Taal Volcano Island were monitored.

Phivolcs has since reiterated that Alert Level 1 is maintained over Taal Volcano, citing the volcano is in abnormal condition and should not be interpreted to have ceased unrest nor ceased the threat of eruptive activity.

The entry to the Taal Volcano Island, a permanent danger zone, especially the vicinity of the main crater and Daang Kastila fissure, is still prohibited.
