Tips on how to start an egg farm

Starting an egg farm isn’t always a walk in the park. But to those who want to try their hand in the venture, Lendl Arakama, a former OFW turned egg farmer, has some helpful tips to prepare aspiring farmers for the road ahead.

His first piece of advice is to study the business before starting. It includes researching what type of chickens to get, preferably those with a satisfactory egg production rate, where to get them, what enclosure fits them best, etc.

The next thing to consider is where to establish the egg farm. The ideal spot for a chicken coop should have an ample water supply and space to ensure the enclosure’s cleanliness and the chicken’s survival. There should also be accessible roads near the farm for easy supply transfer and to connect the farm to the market.

Arakama’s egg farm made a significant impact on Sulu. Its success allowed him to hire people from within his community and provide them with a livelihood. Still, he suggests finding trusted workers who meet the job’s demands and prioritize the chickens’ well-being.

He added that starting small is better because it allows more room for error and brings valuable lessons in the long run. Whenever possible, minimize expenses but don’t compromise the quality of care the chickens receive to get the best results and performance.

Lastly, Arakama said aspiring farmers should be hardworking, organized, focused, especially on customer service, and willing to explore new technology.
